Daily adventure activities of climbing, kayaking, or rafting with science and ecology lessons throughout.

Overview:  Outdoor Adventure & environmental awareness should go hand in hand.  We want to offer a fun and educcational experience for your child to both play and learn in the James River Park.  Each day will have an overarching Science Theme & Adventure Activity to go with it.  Learn about river ecology, macro invertibrates, & fish while flatwater kayaking at Deep Bottom.  Another day learn about the geology of the park & erosion while rock climbing!

Schedule:  August 6th – 10th 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM each day

Ages:  9-13 year olds

 Drop-off & Pick-up:  Parents should arrange to drop-off & pick up the students at the various *access points we will be using for the park.

*Due to weather, river levels, and skill level we will be varying which sections of river we paddle on each program day.  We will communicate ahead on locations for each particular day via email.

Access Points:  Huguenot Flatwater, Pony Pasture, Reedy Creek, Tredegar Flatwater, 14th Street Whitewater Takeout, Manchester Climbing Wall, Deep Bottom Park, Brown’s Island

We provide: All adventure equipment, transportation, & education materials.  Certified instructors and assistants will make sure your child is having fun and learning.  Our instructor/educator to students is 1:3.

Participants need: Suitable river footwear, warm synthetic layers for under the paddle top, & enthusiastic attitudes.

Have you child learn the basics of whitewater kayaking over spring break and enjoy the fun and beauty of the James River.

Schedule:  April 2nd – April 4th: 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM each day

Ages:  12-17 year olds

 Drop-off & Pick-up:  Parents should arrange to drop-off & pick up the students at the various *access points we will be using for the park.  We will be putting on the river at 5:00 each day and taking off about two hours later.

We provide: Boats, skirts, helmets, personal floatation devices, wetsuits, splash tops, & paddles for all participants.  Certified instructors and assistants will make sure your child is having fun and learning.  Our instructor to student ration is 1:3.

Learn the sport of rock climbing outdoors from certified instructors at the scenic Manchester Climbing Wall in the James River Park in Richmond, Virginia with RVA Climbs.

This package is for those new to rock climbing or novice climbers who want a guided experience on the wall.  We provide all equipment, snacks, water, & a 1:5 guide ratio for our clients.  Learn the equipment, tying in, belaying, and other basics of outdoor rock climbing.  Guides will coach you through the moves and teach techniques so you may reach the top of your climb.

Who: We invite climbers of all ages and skill levels to learn with us!

What: Learn the basics of outdoor rock climbing and belaying in a safe and controlled setting

Where: We meet groups at the Manchester Climbing Wall Parking before taking a short hike down to the rock climbing area.

Duration:  The intro course lasts for 3 hrs which includes a short hike to the wall and safety briefing.

RVA Paddlesports will be hosting a raft guide training for candidates interested in summer employment as a river guide.  Trainees should be open to working outside in a challenging and unique environment requiring both solid physical and interpersonal skills. Raft guide training is often the first step for people who end up enjoying a life long passion of whitewater.

Hiring

Applicants should be in strong physical condition able to swim aggressively for 50 yards and lift 50 lbs in moving rafts and equipment.

Cost: $100 for selected trainees – Covers SWR course, all gear use, and shuttles during and post training for potential guides.

Enjoy rafting on the  Lower James River Rafting under the city skyline.  With the James River Park lining both banks of the river most of the way, escape the bustle of the city and immerse yourself in the natural playground of the river.

We whitewater safetywill meet you at Stone Brewing before shuttling up to our put-in point about 4 miles up river.  You will get outfitted with helmets, pfds, & paddles before receiving a safety briefing from the Trip Leader.  We will tackle the class III rapids of Hollywood, Fish Ladders, & Pipeline.  Halfway down the we will stop on a deserted island in the middle of the James to relax with some fresh fruit and snacks*.  After the trip we will bring you back to Stone where you can get dry and enjoy a hard earned refreshment.

Time: Daily @9:00 & 2:00 with 6:00 PM sunset trips also available during summer.

The quieter stretches between Pony Pasture and Reedy Creek can be enjoyed by all people regardless of their ability, age or condition. For those who are not rowers, we can provide a rower so you can relax and enjoy the quiet views of the James River Park.

If you are not looking for the thrill of the rapids, but still want to experience the James Falls, then the Upper James Rafting is a great option.

Time: every day, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Fireworks on the James

Don’t miss your chance for the best view in RVA of the Fireworks on the James the 4th of July.  We will be rafting to a secluded island on the James River and watching the big show complete with a catered grille out on the river.

We will meet you at Forest Hill Park at 6:00pm before shuttling up to our put-in point about 3 miles up river.  From there you will embark on an expedition style* trip with personal gear, beach towels, and food packed in dry-bags on the raft.  About half way down the stretch of river we will stop on a deserted island in the middle of the James.  Relax on a sandy beach, in the river soaking, or on warm bedrock next to a fire.  In addition to fresh fruit, hot dogs, & s’mores, we will be serving both vegetarian and chicken options from local restaurant Goatocado.

The main event comes shortly after dark with fireworks reflecting off the river as you snuggle up with loved ones and take in the moment.  Once the smoke settles we will paddle a short distance under the moon’s glow to our takeout point.

Time: Wednesday July 4th 6:00 – 11:30

Location:  Forest Hill Park

What to bring:  Swimwear, footwear, a beach towel per couple, medications, smiles

We  provide:  Raft, Shuttle, Guides, Dinner, Juice, Water, & Toilets

We will continue with the trip as long as the Fireworks at Dogwood Dell are still scheduled.  If that show is postponed we will hold the trip on the following evening.  Those who can not make the postponed date will be issued a refund

Raft the entire Falls of the James River from Huguenot Flatwater to 14th Street and enjoy a wholesome lunch on the river half way down.  We will spend about 3.5 hours on the water and have plenty of time for relaxing and soaking in the scenery.

We whitewater safetywill meet you at Stone Brewing before shuttling up to our put-in point about 8 miles up river.  You will get outfitted with helmets, pfds, & paddles before receiving a safety briefing from the Trip Leader.  Starting at Huguenot, we will paddle the Class I/II Upper James including Pony Pasture, Choo Choo, & Mitchell’s Gut.  After lunch we will then tackle the class III rapids of Hollywood, Fish Ladders, & Pipeline.   After the trip, we will bring you back to Stone where you can dry off and enjoy a hard earned refreshment.

With heavy rains river levels are now primed for adventure!  Find out why the James River in Richmond, Virginia has the best urban whitewater in the world.  Challenge the exciting rapids in downtown and relax with a beer afterwards at Stone Brewery.

IMG_1503Experience the thrill of urban whitewater and extreme rafting as you tackle the Class IV rapids of the James River.  With more flow comes more options.  Enjoy the classic rapids of Hollywood (IV) & Pipeline (IV) with more juice and/or lesser run rapids like Triple Drop (IV), Seldom Scene (III), & Grumman (IV).  Lines for the day will depend on river level and guide discretion.

We run commercial trips up to 12 ft on the Westham Gauge and provide quality guides, safety kayaker, wetsuits, splash-tops, & hot chai to make sure you have a safe and warm experience on the water.

Where:  Trips will meet at Stone Brewing depending on the river level.  We will then shuttle you up to our Put-in point for the day.  We will have snack & warm drinks for everyone during the trip.1928356_526735545836_6891_n

When:  Trips run when water is above 7ft at 9:00 AM & 2:00 PM & 6:00 PM daily.  Expect to be back at your cars 2.5 hours later.

 Current River Level & Forecast:

Join fellow James River Women on the river for a ladies only clinic and learn the basics of whitewater kayaking.  Attend a single Saturday session or two after work Tuesday evening sessions.

Beginner Clinic

Who:  Ladies who are new to paddling or beginners/intermediates looking to refine skills in a fun and comfortable environment.

What:  Learn the basic skills of whitewater kayaking from our certified instructors.  Both options will start with a flatwater session allowing participants to become familiar with the equipment, strokes, & boat control before tackling any rapids.  Ladies in the Saturday session will continue downstream and paddle the rapids of the Upper James from Pony Pasture to Reedy Creek.  Those participating in the Tuesday sessions will paddle their first session at Tredegar Flatwater near Brown’s Island and return the following Tuesday for a trip down the Upper James.
